VISION ON SOUND - ADVENTURES IN TWENTIETH CENTURY TELEVISION... AND BEYOND...!

Join us as we take a nostalgic journey through the television vaults, and my guests and I investigate, discover, enjoy, and chat about a whole world of televisual delights, with some occasional nonsense thrown in from time-to-time.

Episode three is, quite peculiarly, not quite the show it was intended to be when SANDY and I recorded episode two in what was actually a completely separate recording session – although it might not seem that way.

Once again, I am joined in the studio (Fab Radio International’s very own time travel capsule which remains primed and ready to explore the entire history of television), by SANDY McGREGOR whose “Calamero” voice is not quite becoming legendary yet, but, you never know.

We return to the theme of last week as REMAKES AND REIMAGININGS proved to be such a huge topic that our once ridiculously lengthy seeming time-slot proved far too short for our ramblings and observations.

I’m still not sure that we’ve covered it adequately, but it’s a good topic to start off any of our weekly chats, so I’m sure it’ll crop up again.

There’s also half of an interview with WARREN CUMMINGS who natters with us via a less than great telephone connection - which was, as ever, all my fault as I juggle sliders and buttons and dials and fail utterly to take proper control of this hijacked TARDIS, eh, Chatterton…?

Still, I hope that it still makes some kind of sense – in as much as any of us ever do.

In the third edition of VISION ON SOUND plans have changed from those announced at the end of episode two as, instead of discussing DYSTOPIAN TV (see NEXT WEEK for more of that delight) my studio guest SANDY McGREGOR returns to continue our talk about remakes and reimaginings of TV series.  In the process we move from WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE LIKELY LADS? and CALLAN through CHARLES ENDELL ESQUIRE to THE MAGIC ROUNDABOUT and more.

We also talk to WARREN CUMMINGS (no relation), who did our Diana Rigg tribute back in episode one, about his memories of growing up watching TV in the seventies.

"It's mostly the same as the broadcast edition. Mostly..."

It’s been a peculiar week for me on the VISION ON SOUND rollercoaster, what with Manchester’s toxicity status being at the top of so many people’s news agenda, but we did manage to get ourselves into the studio and have a recording session in which we were pretty much making it up as we went along for a future episode (which was encouraging when you believe you might not be able to string one sentence together when your brain jumps out of your ears in studio), and in which I even managed to press several of the correct buttons for once.

Sadly, at least according to the stats I have, the podcast version of our second edition is struggling to find much of an audience. Despite moments of feeling quite disheartened by this inevitability, we carry on regardless.

Onwards and upwards!

This could simply be because it’s now being spread across ever more platforms and you’re listening in places that won’t tell me that you’ve been there, so here’s a gentle reminder that previous editions remain available by tapping VISION ON SOUND into many of your podcast provider of choice.

That said, I am starting to get more potential guests lined up for our cosy little chats – albeit remotely – so I hope that keeps everybody full of some sort of vague sense of eager anticipation.

I should add a quick reminder that I had to take the scissors to episode three, for the musical reasons I mentioned last week, but I hope that it all still makes some kind of sense.

As ever, we would recommend that (if you can – I know that you’re all terribly distracted with real-world stuff at that time on a Sunday evening), you listen to the programmes on first transmission (currently SUNDAY EVENING AT 7:00PM in the UK on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL Channel 1) to get the show as nature intended, with all of those soon to be excised tunes still neatly slotted into our natterings.
